Gentle Evangelism for Disciples

Welcome to our guide on Christian Gentle Evangelism. In a world that often communicates in loud and hurried ways, we are called to reflect the gentle and attentive nature of our God. "The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit." - Psalm 34:18. This approach to evangelism is about listening deeply, speaking softly, and connecting personally, mirroring how God deals with each of us.

1. Praying First

In your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect.

1 Peter 3:15

Before engaging in conversation, dedicate time to prayer. Ask God to guide your words and open the heart of the person you're speaking to.  Prayer prepares us to be sensitive to the Holy Spirit's leading, ensuring our communication is not just heard but felt. In Gentle Evangelism, we embody the loving kindness of God, meeting people right where they are. Our demeanor plays a crucial role; as much as 80% of our message is communicated non-verbally.

2. Listening Before Speaking

Let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger.

James 1:19

Engage in active listening to understand the person's current struggles or questions about life. This step is crucial for identifying the person's felt needs. Let's be mindful to convey warmth, openness, and genuine concern. Remember, we are not just sharing a message; we are extending an invitation to experience the transformative love of God.

3. Identifying Felt Needs

Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.

Philippians 2:3-4

Gently explore areas such as anxiety, depression, loneliness, or other personal challenges they might be facing. This empathetic approach paves the way for a deeper, more meaningful conversation.

4. Sharing Personal Experience

Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer each person.

Galatians 4:6

Share how your own experiences of reading the Bible and prayer have provided comfort and guidance.  Personal stories of faith and transformation can be incredibly powerful.

5. Offering a Gentle Invitation

And when he (the Holy Spirit) comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment.

John 16:8

If the person shows interest, share your journey to becoming a Christian and how the Bible has been a source of hope and strength. Your testimony can be a beacon of light for someone in the midst of darkness. Ask if they wish to become a Christian. If they do, and you are unsure what to say, go to (Becoming a Christian) for a gospel presentation to use. The presentation will provide steps to present the gospel and relevant Bible passages.

6. Using Gentle Evangelism Cards

For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.

Hebrews 4:12

If the person is curious but not ready to commit, offer them a Gentle Evangelism card. These cards have a QR code that links to Biblehelp.online where they will find resources tailored to specific needs such as anxiety, depression, and more.
